Description: | Visible between the top and middle architraves on the North Gate are four unattached horsemen figures carved on both sides to be equally recognisable from both inside or outside the gate, These riders have special amulets around their necks which are believed to be of apotropaic nature since many of the other figures on this particular gate wear them, and they do not appear on any of the other gates, The Bodhi tree amid a mass of little demons is carved on the middle architrave and again alludes to the enlightenment of Buddha, the episode in which he is tempted by the hosts of Mara's army to leave his meditations but does not heed their suggestions, Notice the interesting juxtaposition of various sizes of these creatures, the surface is veritably alive with them giving a feeling of tremendous depth, although the space taken up in carving is not deeper than that of the other lintel carvings, |
