CAPTCHA – Mercedes SL600, Digital media hand-cut in polycarbonate, 2014

Abstract

CAPTCHA è il progetto per una scultura che riproduce a dimensione reali una macchina sportiva - la Mercedes SL600 del titolo - attraverso strati sovrapposti di policarbonato alveolare trasparente, e sarebbe dovuta essere installata all’interno dei Jardin des Plantes di Parigi. Il progetto, che nelle intenzioni dell’artista si concentra sugli aspetti formali della scultura e nel suo essere collocate in un consesto storico profondamente connotato, si inserisce nelle ricerche portate avanti da Matthew Darbyshire sul potenziale ottico di diversi materiali e processi produttivi, molti dei quali ripresi direttamente dalle tecnologie di stampa e modellazione tridimensionale dei prototipi utilizzate in ambito industriale. Il policarbonato in particolare presenta diverse reazioni alla luce, e permetterebbe a questa scultura di “oscillare tra il trasparente e l’opaco, tra il solido e il vuoto”. Anche la scelta del soggetto rientra nella poetica e nell’iconografia di Darbyshire, sospeso tra un’intrinseca e ironica critica sociale e una riflessione anche formale sull’oggetto, sul lusso, e sul suo valore simbolico e soggettivo. Il comitato FIAC aveva respinto il progetto, che avrebbe dovuto essere supportato anche dalla compagnia produttrice di cristalli Swarovski, all’interno del programma off della fiera. Fu comunque chiesto all’artista di realizzare e installare il lavoro, sostenendolo con risorse provenienti da gallerie commerciali.

CAPTCHA is the project for a sculpture that reproduces a sports car - a Mercedes SL600 - through layers of transparent polycarbonate, and should have been installed inside the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. The project, which focuses on the “striking formal aspects” of such a sculpture in a specific historical context, can be considered alongside Matthew Darbyshire works and researches on the optical potential of different materials and manufacturing processes, many of which looks at the printing technologies and the three- dimensional modeling of the prototypes used in the automotive industry. The polycarbonate in particular has different reactions to the light, and would allow the sculpture to "oscillate between the transparent and the opaque, or the solid and the empty". Even the choice of the subject can be included in the poetic and the iconography of Darbyshire, as it remains suspended between an intrinsic and ironic social commentary and a formal reflection on the object, the luxury, and its symbolic and subjective values. The FIAC Committee rejected the project, which should have been also supported by the Swarovski company, within the off program of the fair. However the artist was asked if he would make and install it anyway with his commercial galleries resources.
