La città sperimentale del campus. Forma e ruolo urbano del campus universitario in Europa

Abstract

La tesi di dottorato esamina, dal punto di vista dell’architetto, il tema del campus universitario in Europa, quale fondamentale componente urbana per la città europea contemporanea e futura. Tale componente, che nella maggior parte dei casi si configura come parte autonoma interna o esterna ad un agglomerato urbano, nasce in seno a concezioni antiurbane in ambito anglosassone (vedi l’archetipo jeffersoniano dell’Università della Virginia) e subisce, nel tempo ed in seguito ad importazioni in ambito europeo, diverse variazioni o addirittura re-interpretazioni tipologiche rispetto all’impianto originario. Fondamentali risultano anche i cambiamenti avvenuti all’interno delle diverse società e delle rispettive istituzioni universitarie, così come le nuove necessità funzionali legate alla ricerca scientifica e all’innovazione tecnologica, determinanti nel ripensamento organizzativo e distributivo dell’impianto. In generale si può comunque affermare come la sua trattazione quale parte di città dalla forma compiuta sia identificabile soprattutto a livello di un profilo perimetrale, senza un’adeguata struttura a determinarne una chiarezza insediativa, come la tradizione europea del fare città ci ha invece abituati; senza inoltre che vi siano costruite le necessarie relazioni con l’intorno che invece il termine “parte” presupporrebbe. Tuttavia oggi sembra essersi rinnovato l’interesse nei confronti di questo tipo insediativo, soprattutto per il ruolo urbano che l’istituzione universitaria che lo abita, in seno ad una economia della conoscenza sembrerebbe ricoprire, oltre che per un nuovo impulso nei rapporti sinergici tra istituzioni e imprese private presenti nei diversi territori di riferimento. In seguito ad una esperienza applicativa, con successiva analisi sullo stato di fatto dei campus europei e passando per una riflessione sulla terminologia (lo spirito e il significato di un insediamento di questo tipo), la ricerca tenta di arrivare a definire, attraverso analisi tipo-morfologiche, linee di orientamento utili proprio alla progettazione di un nuovo tipo di campus dalla peculiare identità europea. Questo perché risulti possibile sperimentare tipi di campus universitari capaci di accogliere le nuove esigenze e, al tempo stesso, configurarsi come luoghi del cambiamento urbano senza che questo ne pregiudichi una qualità insediativa a livello di definizione formale così come di dinamiche caratteristiche legate alla comunità che li abitano e alle funzioni installate. In questo senso, le domande principali dalle quali muove la ricerca sono: quale ruolo può avere oggi e in futuro un campus universitario per la città europea? Come questo potrà incidere nella rappresentazione formale insediativa, tenendo conto della stessa tradizione europea del fare città? Come, infine, potrà relazionarsi il campus con le altre parti di città?

The doctoral thesis examines, from the architect’s point of view, the theme of the university campus in Europe, as a fundamental urban component for the contemporary and future European city. This component, which in most cases is configured as an internal or external autonomous part of an urban area, arises within the anti-urban conception in the Anglo-Saxon field (see the Jefferson archetype of the University of Virginia) and undergoes, over time and in following imports in Europe, different variations or even typological re-interpretations with respect to the original plant. The changes occurred within the various companies and the respective university institutions are fundamental, as are the new functional needs linked to scientific research and technological innovation, which are decisive in the organizational and distribution rethinking of the plant. In general, however, it can be stated that his treatment as part of a city with a completed form is identifiable above all at the level of a perimeter profile, without an adequate structure to determine a settlement clarity, as the European tradition of making cities has accustomed us; without also having built the necessary relations with the neighborhood that the term “part” presupposes instead. However, today there seems to be renewed interest in this type of settlement, especially for the urban role that the university institution that inhabits it, within an economy of knowledge would seem to cover, as well as for a new impetus in synergistic relationships between institutions and private companies present in the various areas of reference. Following an application experience, with subsequent analysis on the de facto state of the European campuses and passing through a reflection on the terminology (the spirit and the meaning of a settlement of this type), the research tries to define, through standard analysis. morphological, orientation lines useful for the design of a new type of campus with a unique European identity. This is because it is possible to experiment with types of university campuses capable of accommodating new needs and, at the same time, configuring themselves as places of urban change without affecting a settlement quality in terms of formal definition as well as of dynamic characteristics linked to the community that inhabit and the functions installed. In this sense, the main questions from which the research moves are: what role can a university campus for the European city have today and in the future? How will this affect the formal settlement representation, taking into account the same European tradition of making cities? How, finally, can the campus be related to other parts of the city?
