The Livestock Sanitary Board was formed in 1889 for the inspection of livestock and for disease control. In 1916 the Board was reorganized under the State Board of Agriculture. The Livestock Sanitary Board records consist of minutes, charts, and publications relating to subjects such as dairy inspections, slaughter houses, and various medical issues including quarantine, serums, and disease.

Scope and Content of Collection

The Livestock Sanitary Board records consist of minutes, charts, and publications. Subjects covered range from animals (specifically cattle, hogs, and horse), slaughtering and slaughterhouses, and dairy inspections to medical issues such serums, quarantines, tuberculosis, anthrax, cholera, and foot and mouth disease. The collection covers the period 1888 to 1934.

Administrative History

The Livestock Sanitary Board was organized in 1889 and was involved in livestock inspections and disease control. In June 1916, the Board was reorganized under the State Board of Agriculture.

Custodial History and Acquisition Information

The Livestock Sanitary Board records were donated to the University of Maryland College Park Libraries in 1959 by Gordon M. Cairns, with additional material given by Mr. Cairns in 1972.

Processing Information

Three series were identified in the records of the Livestock Sanitary Board. Records were placed in acid-free folders, and then stored in acid-free boxes. Lastly, the guide was written.
