Arthur Brandenburg Papers
Abstract
The music educator and bandleader, Arthur H. Brandenburg, was born in Waverly, Iowa in 1899. As a teacher in the Elizabeth, New Jersey Public Schools, he is credited with organizing the city's first high school and junior high school bands. By 1942, Brandenburg was overseeing a music faculty of twenty-one, covering three high schools, four junior high schools, and nineteen grade schools. Elected to the American School Band Directors Assocation in 1954 and the American Bandmasters Association in 1960, he was named as the first Director of the ABA Research Center in 1963. The collection consists of correspondence, programs, scores: manuscript and published, clippings, recordings, books, education materials, presentations, articles, photographs, and memorabilia related to Brandenburg's activities as a music educator and administrator, and his responsibilities as director of the ABA Research Center.
