George B. Bryan (1939-1996) was a professor of theatre at the University of Vermont. This collection came to the University of Maryland via a friend of Dr. Bryan's, Dr. Patti Gillespie of the UMD Theatre department. Dr. Bryan was also a former professional actor and the author of many journal articles and books dealing primarily with theatre history. The collection consists of correspondence, research materials, newspaper and magazine clippings, copies of publications, photographs, and an audio tape. Letters signed by Laurence Olivier and Ed Sullivan are included with Bryan's research materials.

The George Bryan papers cover the period from 1918 to 1995; the bulk of the materials date from 1962 to 1970. The papers consist of both personal and professional papers, including published and unpublished writings, correspondence, research materials, photographs, audio tape, clippings, and articles related to Bryan's work as an actor, theatre professor, and author, including his work with the Everyman Players and the University of Vermont.
Dr. George B. Bryan (b. 1939 - d. 1996) received a B.A. in Latin, Speech, and Drama from Centenary College of Louisiana in 1961, an M.R.E. in Adult Education and Special Ministries from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1964, an M.A. in Theatre History from Indiana University in 1969, and a Ph.D. in Theatre with minors in Rhetoric and English from Indiana University in 1971. Dr. Bryan became the Minister of Religious Drama at three churches in Kentucky from 1958-64 and was also an actor with The Everyman Players from 1958-69. He toured with The Everyman Players throughout the United States, the British Isles, and South Africa. Dr. Bryan became a professor of speech and theatre at the University of Vermont in 1966 and remained there for the rest of his career. Dr. Bryan was a former Director of the Center for Research on Vermont.
