Wall type is a thesis which was based in the reality of a built context: a building typology which is readable in its form and predictable in its character and operation. The light manufacturing operation has as its head an office, and as its body, a shop, in an area ratio of 1:10, and with a set of dichotomies in place as environmental givens and tenets of modern production itself. The Focus of this project was to rethink these dichotomies in terms of the environment at the studio/workshop of Metalab, an enterprise in which I am a principal partner since its official beginnings in April, 1999. In this setting I have reworked the physical, material, spatial, and functional characteristics of the wall which separates the office area from the shop floor. The wall is reconsidered beyond its typical capacities of physical separation and with particular regard for the nature of the spaces it forms as a coordinator of events and intensities within these spaces.
