Abstract
  • The optimal design technique for minimum power loss in traction drive continuously variable transmissions is developed. The mathematical model is developed to evaluate the traction force and torque in traction drive contact. Kinematic analysis of general traction drive contact is conducted to find the best configuration for minimum power loss. The kinematic analysis and optimal design problem formulation are performed for two traction drive configuration as examples of optimal design procedures. The general forms of objective function and constraint equations are derived, and the formulated optimal design problems are implemented to a nonlinear programming algorithm. The optimal design technique is summarized from the two optimal examples.
