Abstract
This paper summarizes some of the studies performed during the past several years on the application of the high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) to the U.S. industrial energy market. The specific concept utilizes a closed-loop thermo chemical pipe (TCP), combined with the HTGR to serve dispersed industrial heat and electrical loads. Heat in various forms can be supplied at temperatures up to about 1700 F. The system substitutes nuclear energy for fluid fuels, conserves energy compared to many alternatives, and features zero emissions at the user site. Potential U.S. market size for the HTGR/TCP system appears to be approximately 8 quads per year (300 GWT to 400 GWT) in the 2000 to 2020 time period. The current U.S. HTGR development program is focused on industrial heat applications.
