This paper deals with Wireless Sensor Networks based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The work proposes an approach for dynamically varying the maximum number of retransmissions allowed by the MAC protocol, depending on the packet loss variations due to interfering nodes and to the variable path loss (i.e., attenuation of the signal strength) introduced by the surrounding environment. The dynamic change is implemented by a Runtime model that takes into account previously collected statistics about the channel state. In this paper a Runtime model is presented that, based on the previously collected statistics through simulation, allows for dynamically changing the maximum number of retransmissions allowed, depending on the packet loss variations observed during a given time window and taking into account also the network delay. The final aim of the Runtime model is tuning the retransmissions number to find a suitable trade-off between packet loss and network delay.
