A phenomenological hysteresis model for magnetostrictive materials is proposed. The model is constituted by a suitable composition of Preisach-like operators. The coupling between the magnetic and the mechanical quantities is taken into account by the appropriate definition of the effective field and effective stress. The model enables to explicitly derive the magnetic field history required to obtain a given strain history. This property can be instrumental for the control of magnetostrictive actuator. The identification procedure and the performance of the model are illustrated by using a set of experimental data measured from a TerFenol-D-based magnetostrictive actuator. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract
