Abstract:

In this work is presented a study of the Medanitos Dunes Field, Fiambalá basin, Catamarca. On it were recognized four morphological units: 1) fluvio-aeolian interaction plain, 2) aeolian sand sheet, 3) interdunes, and 4) dunes. The first unit includes floodplain deposits of the Fiambalá river, which are exposed to subaerial conditions and interact with aeolian processes. The interdune and aeolian sand sheet were characterized together due to the fact they have similar geoforms and sedimentary structures in their deposits, which includes extensive areas with mud cracks, deflation surfaces, fine and medium sand ripples, megaripples, and fixed accretion meso-forms. Their textural features indicate the existence of fluvial incursions that invade these internal zones. The dunes are barjan and with barjanoid crests, and have between 3 and 8 m of height, 50 to 200 m of wavelength, and 150 to 500 m of lateral extension. They are made up of medium to fine sands with a mesokurtic unimodal distribution, although there are minor expected granulometric differences between the different dunes zones. Abundant pumice fragments were found in the studied geoforms, which might have been brought from the Puna by the Fiambalá river. The low density (0,7g/cm 3 ) of these particles allows the wind to transport by saltation clasts bigger than 1ɸ (medium sand). This fact would influence the depositional dynamic of the Medanitos Dunes Field and the grain size of its deposits. © 2018, Asociacion Geologica Argentina. All rights reserved.
