Abstract:

The incidence of osteopenia and osteoporosis, and the frequencies of related fractures, had been studied several times in Latin America. In Argentina, these studies were focused on femoral neck and lumbar vertebras. In the current work, we present an exploratory study of osteopenia and osteoporosis incidence on radio, in women sample of Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. A sample of 1008 feminine subjects was densitometricaly studied by Single Photon Absorciometry on radio, where the gap between radio and ulna is 8 mm. In this region, bone tissue is composed of 80-90% by cortical bone. In this sample, a signified decrement of BMD from women of 50 years old was observed, in relation with young adult females (20-29 years old group). Moreover, we found that in premenopause sample, 15,2% was consistent with osteopenia and 8,1% with osteoporosis, while in the postmenopause sample, 24,8% was consistent with osteopenia and 44,2% with osteoporosis. This work was oriented to make a support to the epidemiological information about the incidence of these metabolic bone diseases in Argentine.
