Abstract:

We study the relationship between the excitation energy absorbed in collisions of drops and the temperature achieved. We investigate central collisions of two-dimensional Lennard-Jones droplets of size 3 impacting on size 100 "nuclei" using micro canonical molecular dynamics techniques. We found that the energy responsible for the breakup of the drops is less than the total available due to the emission of a large number of prompt light particles. We introduce a definition of excitation energy that takes this fact into account, and calculate the caloric curve of the system in the multi-fragmentation regime.
