The focus of this essay is on two Swedish hiphop bands – Labyrint and Kartellen, and how they are represented in ten different articles in connection to cancelled concerts. The purpose of this study is to, by the use of text analysis; understand how newspapers’ portrayal of musicians can lead to different interpretations depending on the choice of words and who gets to be heard. We have used two main questions in order to find out the results of our study: How are the bands portrayed through the narrative storytelling? and how can the narrative storytelling be interpreted? We have used the hermeneutic paradigm and the postmodern perspective as a frame for our study – that there is more than one truth. We are using three different concepts to lift this analysis to a macro level; representation, moral panics and power. The reasons why we are using them, is to understand, explain and form an opinion of the material that emerges from our study. There are patterns shown in our analysis regarding the two bands. The bands are mentioned in all the articles, but they are only directly quoted in just under a third of the articles. Meanwhile, other participants get directly quoted in every article. We can even see that the writer has constructed the articles like a drama, where the news value in big part is being played between the different participants. The reporter plays a big part of this power struggle. Through the narrative the journalist do not only have the power to benefit or disfavour the participants, but also affect the reader by steering him or her in a wanted direction.
