Abstract/Description:
Abstract Mobile technology has been an emerging technology over the last few decades. This phenomenon presents both opportunities and challenges in higher education, especially in the classroom. The purpose of this study was to explore how students' use of mobile technology in the classroom affects their classroom engagement and learning. A sample of students from a University in Nigeria was surveyed to assess their perceptions of their use of mobile technology and for what they used it. Collectively, the majority of the participants reported having access to mobile technology so that they could use the Internet. Most participants indicated that their use of mobile devices in the classroom facilitated their ability to collaborate with other students and concentrate better on their studies. Some of the participants reported that other students' use of mobile technology in the classroom was a source of distraction. The discussion offers avenues for future research regarding the effects of mobile technology on academic performance and engagement. Key words: Student engagement, mobile technology, student involvement theory
