Experimental Evaluation of Journal Bearing Stability and New Gas Wave Bearing MaterialsA gas journal bearing, with a wavy surfaces was tested in a range of speeds up to 18,000 RPM to determine its stability in an unloaded condition as a function of the wave amplitude. The bearing, was 50 mm in diameter, 58 mm long and had 0.01 65 mm radial clearance. Three waves were created on the inner surface by deforming the bearing sleeve. The ratio of the wave amplitude to the radial clearance (the wave amplitude ratio) was varied from zero to 0.3.
