The characteristic neuropathological markers of PD are the presence of Lewy bodies, containing modified alpha-synuclein amongst other proteins, in the surviving neurons, and the degeneration of neuromelanin-containing, dopaminergic neurons in the substance nigra pas compact region of the brain.
