Corpus-based cognitive study of the main English causative verbs : a syntactic, semantic, lexical and stylistic approach

Cette thèse a pour objectif de décrire le comportement syntaxique, sémantique, lexical et stylistique des constructions causatives périphrastiques anglaises avec 'cause', 'get', 'have' et 'make'. L’étude est basée sur un corpus de dix millions de mots extraits du British National Corpus, ainsi que sur des données expérimentales issues de tests d’élicitation et venant confirmer, nuancer, ou parfois infirmer les données de corpus. L’analyse de ces données met en évidence un certain nombre de facteurs, tant syntagmatiques que paradigmatiques, influençant le choix d’un verbe et d’une structure causatifs particuliers. Les découvertes sont interprétées à la lumière de la linguistique cognitive, qui apporte une explication aux faits linguistiques révélés par l'approche de la linguistique de corpus. A l'inverse, l'utilisation de données de corpus donne à la théorie cognitive une base empirique plus solide. Le modèle intégré qui en résulte cherche à donner une image exhaustive des constructions causatives, qui contraste ainsi avec la littérature existant sur le sujet, et qui peut être appliquée à divers domaines, y compris l'enseignement des langues. ...

This thesis deals with periphrastic causative constructions with 'cause', 'get', 'have' and 'make', and aims to describe their syntactic, semantic, lexical and stylistic behaviour. The study is based on a 10,000,000 word subset of the British National Corpus, but the corpus data are supplemented with experimental data collected through elicitation tests, which confirm, qualify or modify the conclusions drawn on the basis of the corpus data. The analysis of the data highlights a number of conditioning factors, both along the syntagmatic and paradigmatic axis, influencing the choice of one particular causative verb and structure over another. The findings are interpreted in the light of cognitive linguistics, which seeks to provide an explanation for the facts of linguistic usage as revealed by the corpus linguistic approach. In return, the use of authentic data in the corpus linguistic approach lends the cognitive theory a more usage-based dimension. The resulting integrated model attempts to give an all-round view of causative constructions, which contrasts with previous literature on the subject and can be applied to various domains, including language teaching.
