This thesis investigates the process of self-actualization that is at the basis of the efficacy of the therapeutic attitudes defined more than 60 years ago by Carl Rogers: congruency, empathy, and unconditional positive regard. The main objective was to empirically determine how the experiencing of an authentic and nonjudgmental listening can help anyone to become more open to oneself in order to experience a more harmonious life with oneself and others. To this end, a scale measuring a person’s level of self-actualization was validated (chapter 1). The process of self-actualization was longitudinally examined in several contexts: on the one hand, among psychology students after a helping skills training using either the role-play method (chapter 2), or a non-directive encounter group (chapter 3) and on the other hand among patients hospitalized for an alcohol withdrawal cure (chapter 4), or for breast cancer treatment (chapter 5). The results of the studies indicate that two elements of the constructive personality change were particularly important: (1) the experiencing or the role of feeling, of perceiving the facilitative attitudes from the “inside”, for both students and patients, and (2) the need to repeat the experiencing of an authentic and nonjudgmental listening over time. These two elements are necessary to give rise to the self- actualization process.
