“Demythologizing” is a hermeneutics forged by Hans Jonas in his early philosophical itinerary in order to existentially interpret the mythological narratives as well as theological and philosophical texts of Late Antiquity. It was, at first, a methodology of objectification and subjectification to understand the existential experience of Gnostic man with regard to Divinity and Being in the world. In following works, Jonas developed the hermeneutics of demythologizing through the tools of objectification and subjectification with respect to the New Testament texts. The word “demythologizing” (Entmythologisierung) was used by Jonas for the first time in a philosophical study “On the hermeneutical structure of dogma” to understand the existential problem of Christian freedom. A few years later, he developed a hermeneutical phenomenology, also by means of objectification and subjectification, in order to understand the living being and the particularity of the human being in nature. The tools of objectification and subjectification were also used by Jonas to found the ontology of the bioethics of responsibility, with regards to the teleology of the living being and man. The objectification and subjectification that Jonas had forged into the hermeneutics of demythologizing was thus modified to understand man’s relationship to the world in the three most important moments of his philosophical journey, namely: studies on Gnosticism and the Pauline problem of freedom in Augustine, the hermeneutical phenomenology of the living being, and, finally, the ontological foundation of the bioethics of responsibility. This hermeneutics of objectification and subjectification made it possible to interpret Being in various ways and in different historical contexts: in Late Antiquity, to understand the existence of the Gnostic man and Christian freedom; in modernity, to understand the organic existence of the living being / human being; as well as in technological civilization, to emphasize man’s responsibility towards the living being and his fellow man in order to preserve the authentic human existence for future generations. Thus, after the development of the hermeneutics of demythologizing to interpret Gnostic and Christian texts, one can find a modification of objectification and subjectification in hermeneutical phenomenology in relation to the “organic being-there”, and in the ontological foundation of the bioethics of responsibility, in order to further develop the teleology of the living being and of man in nature. Meanwhile, Jonas nevertheless uses the hermeneutics of demythologizing, via objectification and subjectification, to criticize Heidegger’s philosophy and Bultmann’s theology in several philosophical articles related to Gnosticism, theology, and, particularly, demythologizing. The method of objectification and subjectification that he forged for the first time in the hermeneutics of demythologizing were modified into the three most important steps of Jonasian philosophical reflection in order to understand the Gnostic man in the historical context of Late Antiquity, man and the living being of the modern era, and the man of technological civilization.
