The Lamp for the Eye of Contemplation, the bSam-gtan mig-sgron by gNubs-chen Sangs-rgyas ye-shes : hermeneutical study with English translation and critical edition of a Tibetan Buddhist text on contemplation

The present thesis is an attempt to understand, from both philological and metaphysical perspectives, an important 10th century Tibetan Buddhist text on contemplation, the bSam-gtan mig-sgron by gNubs-chen Sangs-rgyas ye-shes. This text is a seminal source for the study of the various meditative currents that were transmitted to Tibet from India and China during the early dissemination of Buddhism in Tibet. The thesis is divided into three parts. After a general introduction situating the author and his work, Part I provides an unabridged, annotated English translation of the text. Part II contains a critical edition of the Tibetan text of the first four chapters, preceded by some introductory comments concerning the sources available for its elaboration. Part III, which begins with an overview of the place of meditation within the Buddhist tradition, consists in a hermeneutical study of the four principal chapters of the bSam-gtan mig-sgron (i.e. Chapters IV-VII). While the first two parts of the thesis are more philological in nature and the third part is more metaphysical in its orientation, it is hoped that these two approaches will prove to be complementary and mutually illuminating in providing a deeper understanding of the doctrines and practices exposed in this work.

(fre) Pour l’étude des courants contemplatifs au Tibet ancien, le bSam-gtan mig-sgron (La Lampe pour l’Œil de la Contemplation) de gNubs-chen Sangs-rgyas ye-shes (10e siècle) est un document d’une importance considérable. Ce traité bouddhique sur la méditation, témoignage clef d’une époque charnière pour le bouddhisme tibétain, faillit disparaître au Tibet dès le 13e siècle et ne fut redécouvert que dans les années 1970. Malgré l’intérêt que suscita dès lors le bSam-gtan mig-sgron, sa longueur et les difficultés textuelles immenses qu’il recèle ont souvent été un obstacle à une juste compréhension du texte dans son intégralité. Cette thèse tente d’aborder le bSam-gtan mig-sgron par une approche qui est à la fois philologique et métaphysique. Après une introduction générale situant l’auteur et son œuvre, la première partie de cette thèse consiste en une traduction intégrale annotée en anglais du texte. La deuxième partie comprend une édition critique des quatre premiers chapitres du texte tibétain, précédée d’une introduction philologique présentant les sources disponibles pour son élaboration. Enfin, la troisième partie, qui commence par un survol du rôle de la méditation au sein de la tradition bouddhique, comporte une étude herméneutique en profondeur des quatre chapitres principaux du bSam-gtan mig-sgron.
