This chapter explores to what extent and in what ways specifically translation is or can be perceived as being alternative, particularly when carried out or theoretically reframed in electronic literature and digital literary studies. The two main axes along which we will measure the specificity of such translation are: 1. literature—the electronic genre as well as computationally processed, analyzed, and (re)configured literature—; and, 2. technology—artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms—, both of them in media-inflected frameworks and environments pertaining to the digital, the Web, and mathematical modeling.
