This article reviews the effects of acute and chronic valvular regurgitation on the function of the left ventricle. The article reviews methods and problems in the quantitation of valvular regurgitation, the assessment of left ventricular dimension and ejection fraction, and predictors of surgical outcome. This frequent and important clinical problem can be well addressed by echocardiography.
