This dissertation seeks to explore the potential trade-off arising between the concepts of ”Equality of Opportunity” and ”Plurality of Opportunities”. While the first concept has received much attention in the literature of Welfare Economics, the second has only recently been considered after the publication of the book by Joseph Fishkin, ”Bottlenecks: A New Theory of Equal Opportunity”. The author, a political theorist, calls for the need of building a satisfactory theory of equal opportunity on a sound account of human development. After constructing an argument showing that any theory of human flourishing is incompatible with traditional theories of Equality of Opportunity, he proposes to embrace what he calls ”opportunity pluralism”. This dissertation seeks to formalise the argument made in this book and question the existence of this potential trade-off between equality and plurality of opportunities through the lens of economic theory.
