Abstract
Spanning the last four decades, each of these four composers, John D. Carter, Undine Smith Moore, Moses Hogan, and Jacqueline Hairston, brought into their arrangements of spirituals their own unique, yet similar educational backgrounds and social histories. From why they chose the traditional spirituals they set to the compositional structures and techniques that they used, each song carries its own signature of the composer, and reflects their unified love for the African-American spiritual. Each musician has a sincere desire to preserve the history and identity of the spiritual while keeping its traditions fresh and relevant in modern day repertoire.
