Abstract

In this study, a VIScous Vorticity Equation (VISVE) method is applied to both unidirectional and alternating flow around a cylinder. The gridding scheme for the VISVE method has been changed to allow for vortices to travel farther on both sides of the cylinder. Additionally, this gridding scheme has an orthogonal pattern, which we expect to improve the quality of the results. The predicted vorticity, pressure, and forces are compared to those from a commercial CFD software (ANSYS Fluent). The VISVE results agree with those of Fluent, at the early time steps of the simulation for unidirectional flow. As time progresses, the VISVE and Fluent results deviate from each other even though they are qualitatively similar. In the case of alternating flow, VISVE predicts results which are very close to those from Fluent with small Keulegan-Carpenter (KC) numbers, while they deviate at higher KC numbers.
