The abandoned Bottino Pb(Zn)-Ag mining district (Apuane Alps, north-western Tuscany) has a long mining history dating back at least to the eleventh century AD. Abandoned mining wastes represent a potential source of heavy metal pollution. A study of mineralogy and chemistry of the waste dumps, and of the chemistry of stream, mine drainage and waste seepage waters indicates that alteration phenomena occurred, until now, under near neutral conditions, and with no significant pollution of surficial waters. However, some waste heaps may present some hazard in the long run.

Abstract

The abandoned Bottino Pb(Zn)-Ag mining district (Apuane Alps, north-western Tuscany) has a long mining history dating back at least to the eleventh century AD. Abandoned mining wastes represent a potential source of heavy metal pollution. A study of mineralogy and chemistry of the waste dumps, and of the chemistry of stream, mine drainage and waste seepage waters indicates that alteration phenomena occurred, until now, under near neutral conditions, and with no significant pollution of surficial waters. However, some waste heaps may present some hazard in the long run.
