The article argues the impossibility of ignoring the current social crisis, at different levels, in the evaluation of the future of the university and university research. Starting with some considerations on the role of neoliberal policies in determining the current social and economic crisis, the main risk factors for the future of Italian universities are found within the crux of social exclusion. The article discusses the risk factors related to social exclusion and restriction of democratic rules for the university, especially from the side of the potential difficulties for the Humanities. The article concludes with some considerations on the role of pedagogy, and the need for it to maintain a firm position in fighting the factors of this crisis.

Abstract
