Summary of the collection

Tol is an indigenous language spoken in remote areas of the departments of Francisco Morazán and Yoro in Central Honduras. Its exact genetic affiliation is still in doubt, that is, it has not been established which other languages to which it is related.

It has been more than 20 years since the last studies of Tol were published (Ronald Dennis 1990). The closest thing to a reference grammar published on the language is a synthesis of earlier work by Dennis Holt (1999). Ronald Dennis estimated the number of Tol speakers at around 250, but he mentions nothing about the vitality of the language, sociolinguistic situation, speaker attitudes or anything of the sort, and Dennis is the last investigator to have worked on Tol in the field.

Collection contents

This collection consists of video and audio recordings documenting varying genres: interviews, personal accounts/ stories, everyday situations, basket making, children at play. Still photos show some of the circumstances surrounding the recorded scenes and people not in the recordings proper.

The collection is divided into three main sections.

The first part of the collection is a series of sociolinguistic interviews. Detains can be found in the files ET_corpus_meta_english.txt or ET_cuerpo_meta_español.txt and in the IMDI files with in each bundle. Each of the bundles in this part of the collection has the prefix ET.

The second part is a series of narratives which make up the body of the corpus. Each of the bundles in this part of the collection has the prefix HT.

The final part of the collection is a elicitation sessions. Each of the bundles has the prefix SE. In these sessions files from the corpus proper were analysed and glossed. These sessions were also used to test analyses and paradigms and elicit further examples.
