Abstract:
The eye is a vital organ from a functional perspective, but loss of an eye also often leads to altered emotional, psychological, behavioural and social responses. This may adversely affect the quality of life of a patient and many experience a feeling of societal discrimination, especially if there has been no provision of an acceptable prosthesis. Unilateral enucleation has a major impact, as it results in complete deprivation of visual input to a section of the brain. Restriction to monocular vision affects spatial perception, motion systems and visual direction and may result in diminished performance.
