Seii ryakuron 西醫略論 is a Japanese reprint of Xi yi lüe lun 西醫略論, a Chinese translation of the original book by Benjimin Bobson. The books in the Melikian collection are three volumes from the four-volume set of Seii ryakuron 西醫略論, reprint of a Chinese version published in Xianfeng 咸豐7 [1857] by Ren ji yi guan 仁濟醫館 in Shanghai. The publisher of the Japanese reprint, Miyake Gonsai 三宅艮齋, was a surgeon who worked for the Sakura domain, and taught at Tokugawa government’s Institute of Western Medicine. Although Gonsai originally studied Dutch medicine, he was more interested in British and American medical technology. Book 1 features general remarks and general discussion on medicine, including medication, food, inflammation, ulcer, burns, etc. Book 3 discusses ophthalmology, ear, nose and mouth, external wounds, etc. Book 4 has many illustrations and a glossary in English and Chinese.
