Abstract:
English has become increasingly important in this era of globalisation. Its exponential spread and use worldwide has given rise to a variety of new nativised or localised Englishes, including Asian Englishes, justifying the need to document the features of these Englishes and consider their pedagogical implications and applications in the region. This chapter therefore highlights the dynamic nature of Englishes in Asia in relation to issues concerning language variation, innovation and bilingual speakers’ creativity by way of providing a context for the rest of the contributions to the book. The final section presents a synopsis of each of these chapters which deal with the use of Asian Englishes in various domains, including schools, social life, academic discourses, professional communication, and teachers’ pedagogy.
