La soglia del senso. Il corpo come istanza semiotica

This paper investigates corporeality from a semiotic perspective: drawing on an overview of the so–called “mind–body problem”, we highlight the elements that make it possible to conceive the body as the threshold of sense. The second part of the essay is therefore devoted to a theoretical discussion of how various branches of semiotics have interpreted and studied the body: from the development of Greimasian theory to Peirce’s observations on signs and perception, also encompassing more recent analyses by contemporary scholars analyses by contemporary scholars (with specific regard to Ugo Volli’s ground-breaking observations on the practices of writing and interpretation of the body as a text), we highlight, we highlight the strengths and the weaknesses, the results and the challenges of a semiotic approach to corporeality, making specific reference to the crucial transformations the body is undergoing in contemporary societies.
