Close-up of two standing monk statues in Thousand Buddha cave (Qianfo dong 千佛洞), Pilu dong 毗廬洞 Anderl, Christoph
Description
These two paired statues of standing monks are located in the Thousand Buddha cave (Qianfo dong 千佛洞), Pilu cave (Pilu dong 毗盧洞), Anyue xian 安岳縣, Sichuan sheng 四川省. They date to the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and can be found on either side of the central triad. Their bases are detached from the altar, hence they are moveable statues. They are 1.32 meters high. Photos [1] and [2] show a young monk on the west side (viewer's left), while photo [3] shows a relatively elderly monk on the east side (viewer's right). These two statues can tentatively be identified as portraying Ānanda and Kāśyapa. Metadata created by Huajie Fan (May 31, 2022)
