Abstract

This study is an attempt to present a comprehensive analysis of the variety of scholarly activities pursued by Sui 隋 dynasty literati by focusing on the state councillor Xu Shanxin 許善心. Particular attention is paid to the daily activities of this literatus, rather than to his scholarly activities. The range of Xu's activities was divided into the following four areas: formulating state rituals ; establishing state library collections; compiling homages to the new dynasty, and dealing with personnel matters related to School for the Sons of the State. Viewed from the perspective of Xu's expertise in the Classics, it becomes apparent that this range of activities was closely linked. Moreover, it is clear that Xu's scholarship was not merely a private endeavour, but rather was inextricably tied to the performance of state administration. This paper concludes that it is, therefore, inappropriate to employ the modern Western academic categories of "religion" and "ideology" in attempting to understand such varied literary activities. Similarly, the wide breadth of such literary activities ought not to be over looked in a narrow scholarly focus on private writings or pedagogic activities alone.
