Abstract

This paper attempts to investigate the performativity of the actors' voices in Sacre Rappresentazioni in order to explain their effects to the audience in 15th century Florence. First, we analyze accordance and solecism of the scenarios' rhyme to examine the features of the voices in the performance. Second, we study the stanzas in which Adam names the animals and those in which Podesta gives names to the Jewish people, and compare them with the social context of their time: the eating habit of the Florentines and the Christian doctrine of Descent into Limbo. We hereby outline the performativity of the actors' voices as the representation of blank that must have awaked ambivalent feelings in the audience and contributed renewing their faith in sacredness.
