Abstract: Surfaces and forms that closely simulate their earliest Cenozoic and Mesozoic precursors are preserved in many parts of the world. It is not suggested that the landforms under review have not changed over time, but that in some circumstances such changes have been so slow that the essential character of the form persists. Morphology and drainage remain intact, though frequently relief amplitude has been increased. Physically hard and chemically unreactive bedrock, protection against water contact, tectonic and topographic stability, uneven distribution of weathering and erosion, a tendency to scarp retreat, and the operation of reinforcement mechanisms are conducive to conservation, especially where two or more of these protective factors coincide. Examples of such preservation are cited and problems related to the dating and survival of epigene-etch surfaces are discussed. © 2003 by V. H. Winston & Son, Inc. All rights reserved.
