Abstract
12 travertine samples from Colle S. Nicola, Civitella del Tronto and Montesanto deposits (Teramo, Abruzzi region) were analyzed for18O/16O,13C/12C, SO= 4 and Sr++. The δ18O values, ranging from 21.58 to 22.73, conceivably reflect precipitation from surface waters of meteoric origin at ambient temperatures. The fairly high δ13C values (2.71 to 8.40) are attributable to kinetic isotope effects involving the carbon-bearing species in solution. The sulphate and strontium contents range from 0.50 to 0.75% and from 655 to 1115 ppm, respectively. These data suggest that the travertine-depositing waters circulated through sulphate-rich levels. At Colle S. Nicola, two facies of travertine, porous and compact, are recognizable. These facies display distinct isotopic and geochemical features, and it is therefore very likely that these two types of travertine formed under different genetic conditions.
