Abstract

A model of the relationship between sediments and pore water is solved for two general limiting cases. A scale analysis indicates that the chloride concentration at DSDP Site 374 in the Eastern Mediterranean is not steady: at 200 m below the water-sediment interface it is estimated to increase by 4 μmole/l y. Interstitial waters are advected from their original horizon to the host horizon; the vertical structure of this displacement is reconstructed and the latter is found to be minimal at the water-sediment interface and 440 m below it. The maximal displacement is about 70 m and occurs at the intermediate depth of 350 m. Evidence indicates that the dolomitization process at the depth of 400 m terminated about 2 m.y. ago.
