2024, Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology -Part A : Molecular and Integrative PhysiologyIdentification of different physiological functions within the gills and epipodites of the American lobster: Differences in metabolism, transbranchial transport, and mRNA expression
2023, Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology -Part A : Molecular and Integrative PhysiologyCitation Excerpt :The base of each podobranch gill is also directly attached to a separate branchial epithelium known as an epipodite that possesses a simple main afferent and efferent artery that moves hemolymph between its two epithelial layers allowing the organ to function as a single large sail-like lamella (Haond et al., 1998). Although their single-lamellar surface area is limited, epipodites are filled with mitochondria-rich thick epithelial cells that are heavily infolded along their basolateral membrane (Haond et al., 1998) – similar to the ionoregulatory posterior gills of osmoregulating crabs (Barra et al., 1983; Compere et al., 1989). Although the trichobranchiate gills and epipodites of lobster presumably regulate similar systemic parameters as the well-characterized phyllobranchiate gills of brachyurans (Henry et al., 2012), their transport capacities and potential tissue-specific capacities have only been studied at a limited level in terms of their osmoregulatory and calcium transport capacities.
