2021, Journal of South American Earth SciencesCitation Excerpt :Plutonic activity in the Patagonian Andes extends from the Jurassic to the Neogene (e.g. Hervé et al., 1984; Pankhurst et al., 1999; Hervé et al., 2007; Sánchez et al., 2008; Ramírez de Arellano et al., 2012; González-Guillot 2016; Muntener et al., 2018). Volcanic units are widely distributed, with outcrops concentrated in extra-Andean Patagonia and Eocene to Pleistocene ages (Charrier et al., 1979; Puig et al., 1984; Ramos and Kay, 1992; Gorring et al., 1997, 2003; D'Orazio et al., 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005; Gorring and Kay 2001; Espinoza et al., 2005, 2010; Guivel et al., 2006; Boutonnet et al., 2010). Late Paleogene plutonic and volcanic rocks are scarce, which may reflect original extent of magmatism or preservation within the region.

It produced a cluster of small pyroclastic cones (<150 m) and columnar-jointed lava domes (Puig et al., 1984); this small to moderately energetic activity makes unlikely that widely dispersed tephra sourced from this complex. Stratigraphic logging and sampling of tephra layers were performed (February 2015 field work) in SPTF (Fig. 1 and Table 1 for coordinates of stratigraphic sections).

After a hiatus, calc-alkaline volcanism resumed briefly at Peninsula Hardy in earliest Miocene times before ceasing again until recently (Puig et al., 1984). The absence of calc-alkaline volcanism in this later period might be related to the approach of the Farallon–Phoenix ridge off the margin's western end at ~ 30 Ma (Fig. 8), and the subduction of young, volatile-poor, buoyant oceanic lithosphere.

This time may also have seen subduction of parts of a Phoenix–Nazca ridge crest south of Cape Horn, opening a slab window that has been related to the occurrence of alkali basalt volcanism at Packsaddle Island (Breitsprecher and Thorkelsen, 2009; Eagles et al., 2009a; Puig et al., 1984). By removing an along-ridge larval dispersal route between the Pacific Ocean and Scotia Sea, such a collision may also have contributed to the 25.9–13.4 Ma divergence in Kiwaid crab biogeography, which is otherwise attributed to the onset of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (Roterman et al., 2013).
