Abstract

Abstract Kuliokite-(Y) occurs in an amazonite pegmatite at Høydalen, Tørdal, as pseudomonoclinic crystals up to 3 cm in size. Calculated and observed X-ray powder diffraction data are tabulated. Cell parameters refined from powder data are a = 8.607(5), b = 8.687(6), c = 4.318(2)Å, α= 102.82(4), ß = 97.96(5), γ= 116.65(4)°. Microprobe analyses give a formula close to (Y,REE)4Al(SiO4)2(OH)2F5 (Z= 1). The mineral is optically biaxial negative, 2V= 10-15°, r>v, α= 1.657, ß ≈ γ= 1.703 (±0.003). The measured density is 4.20±0.02g/ cm3. The mineral is easily decomposed by the introduction of Ca- and CO2-bearing solutions to kainosite-(Y), Ca2Y2Si4O12(CO3>H2O, and subsequently to kamphaugite-(Y), Ca2Y2(CO3)4(OH)2-2-3H2O. The latter mineral may have an unusually low H2O content
