Abstract

In the frame of the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) two deep ice cores had been drilled. The first one on Dome C, the second one, which was finished in January 2006, at Kohnen station, Dronning Maud Land. For the drilling at Kohnen station the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven (AWI), had the logistic leadership. The talk will give an overview over the AWI, the German gate to Antarctica Neumayer station and the EPICA deep drilling at Kohnen station. It will present some highlights of the EPICA project. These include paleotemperature and CO2 concentrations back to 800,000 years before present.
