Description
A boxing tournament at the Star Picture Theatre. Pat McDonald (referee), Bill Capewell (back to camera - yardman/barman at the old Don Hotel), 'Speck' Matt (wharf labourer). The Aboriginals' seats were removed and planks put on drums (the Star Theatre was hired). Seats in front of screen (ringside) cost five pounds, then five pounds ringside (front of picture), then three rows back and further were one pound. For the pictures the Aborigines entered by side gate two nights a week and paid a shilling. It was two shillings and two and sixpence upstairs. Joe Ruddick worked at night there for a while. The advertising banner reads "Victoria Bitter is the best".,
