They had arrived in Darwin on 10 December 1934 to transfer the first Australian overseas airmail from Darwin to Singapore following the grounding of the Qantas (and other airlines) DH86 Dragon aircraft following a series of fatal crashes. Whilst accident investigations were underway the AWIS aircraft were chartered by Qantas Empire Airways (QEA) from Imperial Airways to carry out the Brisbane-Singapore service.,
