    • Biographical / Historical note:Arnold Carl Klebs, son of the well-known bacteriologist Edwin Klebs, was born in Berne, Switzerland, on March 17, 1870. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Zurich in 1888 and his M.D. from the University of Basel in 1895. He followed his father to the United States in 1896 and became a specialist in the treatment of tuberculosis. In the first decade of the 20th century, he praticed in Chicago, and was active in promoting sanatoria. He and his wife ledt for Switzerland, but he returned to the Unite Stated in World War I, when he was in Washington, D.C. researching bibliographies at the Army Medical Library. In his retirement in Switzerland, Klebs studied and published in medical history. He was interested in the bibliography of variolation and vaccination, herbals, and especially of scientific and medical incunabula. He built a personal library of medical history visited by numerous physicians and historians of medicine. He decided to donate his books, along with those of his friends Harvey Cushing and John F. Fulton, to the future Medical Historical Library. Klebs died in Nyon, Switzerland, on March 6, 1943. His books arrived in New Haven in 1947.
