Abstract
This small collection contains primarily examples of the bold graphic style Hnizdovsky adopted toward the end of his career in the 1970s and 1980s. Some of the prints are hand colored; many are signed editions.
Biographical / Historical
Jacques Hnizdovsky, a Ukrainian-American woodcut artist, was born in Chortkiv Raion, Ternopil Oblast' (Ukraine),in 1915. He was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1939 when the Nazis invaded Poland. He made his way to the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, and made his living as a freelance graphic designer. He painted and, in the early 1940s, did some woodcut work. One of his freelance jobs took him to Paris and, ultimately in 1949, to the U.S. Hnizdovsky started out in St. Paul, MN, and then moved to New York City, where he designed book jackets, posters, fabrics, illustrated books, and other jobs that allowed him to continue his painting and woodblock printmaking. He died in 1985.
