Scope and Contents

The Matthew Jennett papers contain subject files, sound recordings, and other material documenting the life and work of Matthew Jennett as editor of Pharos Books. The subject files feature correspondence, writings, printed ephemera, such as broadside and keepsakes, and other material documenting publication projects with Pharos Books. There are files for authors, publishers, and designers, including Bob Cato, Franz Douskey, Peter Ganick, Leslie Lee, and Jonathan Williams,Patrick Leigh Fermor, among others. Sound recordings collected by Jennett consist of nineteen 78 speed albums containing radio broadcasts dating from the 1940s. There are programs from the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) and the Columbia Workshop, including "Emma Lazarus," from the "Eternal Light Series" held at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, and "They Burned the Books," a radio drama written by Stephen Vincent Benet.

Acquisitions recieved after the initial gift date were organized by accession. Researchers should note that material within each acquisition may overlap with/or relate to material found in other acquisitions.

Matthew Jennett

Matthew Jennett, former editor of Pharos Books in New Haven, Connecticut, was Curator of Special Collections, Rare Books & Archives, The American College of Greece from 1993 to 2005.

Processing Information

This collection was acquired through a series of gifts from Matthew Jennett. The original gift, consisting of subject files, was received in 2006 and cataloged as the Matthew Jennett Papers Relating to Pharos Books (YCAL MSS 231). Subsequent gifts of manuscript material received in 2007 and 2008, consisting of additional subject files, sound recordings, and other material, were added to the papers and the collection was renamed the Matthew Jennett Papers. Additional gifts were received in 2011 and 2012 and processed in 2019.

Opening Hours

Access Information

The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
