The National Ubu Roi Bake-Off Collection consists of thirty-six plays written during a grassroots event organized by the playwright Paula Vogel. The event took place on President's Day, February 19, 2018.
National Ubu Roi Bake-Off
The National Ubu Roi Bake-Off was a grassroots event organized by playwright Paula Vogel. A bake-off is a writing exercise that requires its participants to write a piece on an assigned theme with assigned elements within 48 hours. Participants then gather and stage readings of their pieces.
On President’s Day, February 19, 2018, playwrights and community members gathered for a bake-off inspired by Ubu Roi, a play by Alfred Jarry that opened and closed on December 10, 1896. Eighteen bake-offs were listed on Paula Vogel’s website at locations across the United States, with one bake-off in Canada; many more informal bake-off gatherings also occurred.
Processing Information
Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections as they are acquired, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit.
This collection received a basic level of processing, including rehousing and minimal organization.

Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
